Ophthalmic surgery – for many young ophthalmologists in Germany, this field of ophthalmology is just a dream or a fantasy. To serve him, you usually need a good and experienced mentor who is willing to train you in a time-consuming way. The competition at the eye clinics in Germany means that young ophthalmologists who are still in their specialist training are usually not given the opportunity for adequate surgical training.
I had a similar experience. As a doctor in the 3rd year of training, ophthalmic surgery has always fascinated me. However, the option of surgical training in anterior or posterior segment surgery was not available at my current training institution, a university hospital in eastern Germany. In order to enable myself to get started in cataract surgery during my specialist training, I decided after extensive research to do a phaco training in Egypt.
The Egyptian Ophthalmic Training Association (EOTA) has been offering surgical training in Cairo for many years, including in the field of anterior and posterior segment surgery. Tailor-made surgical training is promised, which is adapted to the individual abilities of the eye surgeon - from beginners to experienced ophthalmic surgeons. to perform phacoemulsifications and lens implantation under peribulbar anesthesia.
The next few days were similar: I was always the first surgeon to perform the operations under the supervision of my instructor and became noticeably safer from time to time. After about a week, in which I operated on between 2 and 5 cataracts a day and also spent a lot of time looking over the shoulders of the other trainees during their surgeries, the level of difficulty was increased. My cases now also included advanced lens opacities and other techniques had to be used for phacoemulsification.
For me personally, the phaco training in Cairo has had an immense influence on my ophthalmological development, which I can recommend to any ophthalmologist interested in surgery without much previous knowledge of ophthalmicsurgery. Safety in the surgical treatment of patients with eye diseases is and remains the be-all and end-all. The safe entry into cataract surgery and the safe execution of the individual steps of the operation must be guaranteed or learned, which is made possible by excellently organized and structured surgical training in Cairo.

The 4-week surgical training in Cairo, Egypt effectively improved surgical confidence and micro incisional skills according to ST reduction and complication rate occurrence. Ophthalmologists benefit from enhancing their cataract skills in a short time following a well-structured cataract extraction course. This would undoubtedly lead to improved surgical outcomes for patients undergoing extraction.

This was a fantastic cataract surgery course. I completed an advanced cataract surgery course for 2 weeks during which I performed advanced phaco surgeries including small pupils using iris hooks ans traumatic cataracts using a CTR, ECCE, and even intra. Furthermore, I implanted sulcus three-pieces and iris-clow lenses in some of the cases. My trainers were excellent as apart from their vast surgical experience and knowledge, they had great teaching skills. They offered valuable help for all administrative issues and was the first point of contact to book my dates with the surgeries I wanted. I decided to join this course after the very positive feedback of a friend and booked my slot 2-3 months in advance. This course easily exceeded my expectations and was extremely useful since after completing it I feel more confident in managing advanced cataract cases. I attended a cataract surgery course in Cairo, based on recommendation of colleagues of mine from Jordan, and Iraq who did the same course earlier.
I am writing this review at the course to an end, and I am preparing to fly back to UK, where I work.
I would like to describe this overly positive experience.
First, arranging for the course was very easy. Personally, I took the contacts from my colleagues. A lovely lady Mrs Mahinaz is in charge of coordination and arrangements. She is very cooperative, punctual, and flexible.
Weather in Cairo was very good, sunny and moderately warm. The city is safe, and all facilities are available. People are generally very friendly and welcoming.
The center operated Saturday through Thursday. It is clean and well-maintained inside. The team are welcoming and friendly. This includes receptionists, nurses, and doctors. It is an overly positive atmosphere.
They have three operation theatre, with very good machines. They use Leica/Zeiss microscopes, and they have two infinity phaco machines and one Oertli machine. My training was on the infinity machine, which is widely used in Europe.
Regarding the cataract surgeries, patients are identified through the outreach clinics, and the organization provides full transport, treatment, and follow up for them. The whole team makes sure that the best treatment is delivered to those patients. Additionally, many of the patients who are referred to center with complex cases have their surgeries done by the consultant or specialist, to ensure best outcome. The patients are very appreciative and pleased by the treatment they receive. Knowing that by taking this course I am contributed to this humanitarian cause is a satisfying fulfilling feeling. Fourth, the social aspect of this trip. During the course, the team was very generous, the coordinator was supportive all the way, and helped sort several things like food, covid, PCR testing for travel etc.... I was offered complimentary Egyptian food at the center, and another trainee and I were invited and some of doctors at the center for a dinner at a cruise in the Nile. We re also taken on a drive around some of the ancient areas in central Cairo. I felt that was very heart-warming. Overall, I feel that this was a very positive experience. I can tell that I have progressed in cataract surgery, and I am so excited to apply the new skills I learned in my future career. I believe that I have made a wise investment. To this end, I would liketo thank all the team. Thank you for supporting me through this stage of my career and thank you for having me. Hope we can meet again soon. Best wishes.

I joined phaco training with EOTA as an absolute beginner in phaco. The training team is very supportive, gives me frequent feedback, tries to explain trainee's mistakes to correct and improve skills, aims to build a self-confidence.
